Oscars 2019: Lady Gaga wins best original song for A Star is Born

Lady Gaga is still on top even though she couldn’t complete the double Oscar winning act after she lost to another female star after she won Best Song at the Academy Awards.

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper have continued their sweep of the Best Song gongs of their year’s awards season at the Oscars.

Gaga made Oscars history to become the first entertainer to win nominations in both the Best Song and Best Actress categories in the same year.

She wouldn’t complete the double with Olivia Colman named Best Actress for The Favourite.

Reflecting the love in the room for Gaga and her break-out performance in her first major feature film role, Colman saved her acknowledgement for one of the world’s biggest pop stars to the end of her acceptance speech, shouting out her name as she spotted her fellow nominee in the front row.

But a tearful Gaga clearly didn’t expect to beat out Colman and her fellow nominees, making sure to deliver all her thank yous during the Best Song acceptance speech.

Shallow was the frontrunner for the Best Original Song trophy from the second the nominations were revealed.

In a nice surprise for her, the song’s win and the Gaga and Cooper performance quickly catapulted Shallow back to No.1 on iTunes within an hour after awards.

The buzz around the song’s fortunes escalated as it took out the Golden Globes and BAFTA awards for Best Original song, and picked up two Grammys, even as the film was snubbed for trophies in the major acting categories.

And besides a surprise appearance by Cooper to perform the song with Gaga as her Las Vegas show in December, the Oscars was the first major live performance of the No. 1 duet by the pair.

Gaga didn’t indulge a costume change from her classic Audrey Hepburn-channelling black gown for the song’s performance, taking Cooper’s hand as the pair casually walked to the stage from their front row seats for the highly-charged duet.

After Adam Lambert and Queen’s electrified performance of We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions to open the awards, the Star Is Born hit single proved to be the big musical moment everyone had been waiting for.

A bit of Gaga’s Oscars shine was stolen in the week leading up to the awards when it was revealed she had split from her talent agent fiancé Christian Carino. The heightened emotional chemistry between Gaga and Cooper during their Shallow duet did little to quell the rumours the pair’s onscreen love story may have spilled into real life.

While the Academy judges are often at odds with film enthusiasts, let alone music fans, Shallow’s pivotal moment in A Star Is Born coupled with its phenomenal popularity — it is closing in on one billion video and song streams — appeared to guarantee the title.

The film’s soundtrack also topped charts worldwide and is estimated to have sold more than two million copies, factoring in streaming as well as downloads and sales of CDs.

Mother Monster, as she is known to her million of fans, won even more hearts with her grace on the Oscars red carpet and then when she assisted Best Actor nominee Rami Malek — representing that OTHER music movie Bohemian Rhapsody — in straightening his bow tie.

After her stellar performance in The Star Is Born, acclaimed by critics as a naturally talented actor who brought truth to her role as Ally, the big question remains whether or not Gaga will shift focus to her fledgling acting career.

Gaga is scheduled to return to her day job in May when the next leg of her Enigma and Jazz and Piano shows resume in Las Vegas.

She is also working on LG6, the working title for her new studio album expected later this year which features collaborators including Shallow co-writer and her recent collaborator Mark Ronson and acclaimed Scottish producer and artist Sophie.

The chart-blasting performance of Shallow and the Star Is Born soundtrack has restored her stocks as a No. 1 pop star after the hits-and-miss success of her most diverse studio album, Joanne.

No doubt Gaga will bring some of the Star Is Born big anthemic flavour to her LG6 project.
