British pop artist Dua Lipa has been recruited to add her star power to the 2019 ARIA Awards.

As the 24-year-old chart-topper preps her long-awaited new single Don’t Start Now for release tomorrow, ARIA confirmed she will join American pop star Halsey at the annual music awards on November 27.

Why Tones and I wishes chart-slaying hit would ‘fly away’

Dua Lipa has been a constant presence on the Australian airwaves since launching her career with the debut single Be The One four years ago.

She dominated the pop zeitgeist in 2017 with her girl power anthems New Rules and IDGAF before linking with Calvin Harris for last year’s global smash One Kiss.

Both Lipa and Halsey are intriguing guests for the ARIAs. While their local record labels would be keen for the exposure on the red carpet and the broadcast of the awards via Nine and YouTube, neither made the roll call of 10 global stars for Best International Artist.

Artists vying for public votes for that trophy include Taylor Swift, P!nk, Ed Sheeran, Post Malone and current concert tourist Shawn Mendes.

It is unusual for organisers to announce two international artists performing at the ARIAs ahead of revealing the homegrown talent usually drawn from the year’s leading nominees.

Perhaps celebrating the international flavour of this year’s big music night was to heat up demand for the public tickets on sale.

Record labels lobby fiercely for their local artists to feature on the awards stage as it boosts their profile to a mainstream television and online audience and generally results in a small spike in sales the day after the ARIAs.

It would be a safe bet this year’s biggest star Tones and I, who received eight nominations thanks to her break-out smash Dance Monkey, will be performing at the Star Event Centre gig and for the punters watching at home.

And Guy Sebastian, who will take on the tough gig of hosting the ARIAs and has four nominations including Best Male Artist, is a no-brainer to perform his Choir hit at the awards.

Other artists in the mix would include Hilltop Hoods, Thelma Plum and the Teskey Brothers.
