Keith Urban shocks fans performing queer anthem at billionaire’s party at Mar-a-Lago
Keith Urban fans have feelings about his performance of a queer anthem at a Mar-a-Lago party hosted by an Aussie billionaire.
Keith Urban fans are divided about the country superstar performing Chappell Roan’s queer anthem Pink Pony Club at an Aussie billionaire’s party at Mar-a-Lago on the weekend.
Guests at the party hosted by Anthony Pratt, and attended by President Donald Trump, were treated to a private gig by Urban, who also covered Bob Marley and the Wailers’ classic Is This Love?
It’s not unusual for high-profile music stars to cut big cheques to play private parties, and Pratt booked Katy Perry to play an industry dinner last year at his Melbourne mansion to an audience including Prime Minister Anthony and Premier Jacinta Allan.
Some Urban fans were taken aback that this time he was playing for a largely conservative crowd, which included the President.
Pratt donated US$10 million to Trump’s election campaign last year and has committed to invest US$5 billion in American manufacturing operations.
“Is he really covering Chappell Roan for Trump donors?!?” asked a commenter on an Instagram post that shared the original footage from a party attended by Florida real estate agent Tali Israel.
Fans of the queer pop star were tagging her on their comments about his cover choice and speculating that Roan would not be happy that Urban chose to perform her song at the President’s Florida HQ.
“Well….. I can’t help but wonder how @chappellroan feels about Keith Urban singing her song at Mar a Lago,” mused one observer.
The country superstar, who has been based in Nashville for more than 25 years, rarely discusses politics beyond posts to confirm he voted in previous US elections with his now ex-wife, Nicole Kidman.
When asked several years ago if he would hypothetically perform at the White House during Trump’s first term, the diplomatic musician sidestepped the question.
“I would like to probably answer that question when it comes up, but I’m a citizen, and I like to do what’s right,” he said.
Urban made a flying visit back to Australia a year ago to launch his High album with an intimate show and Q&A hosted by satirical news platform Betoota Advocate at the Bob Hawke Beer and Leisure Centre in Marrickville.
“I know Keith probably doesn’t want to be involved in politics, but a very precarious choice aligning with this current administration, hopefully he was paid very well,” wrote another fan.
“Singing Pink Pony Club at a Trump event might be a gag. He might have done this on purpose,” someone else speculated on X.
The viral video footage of Urban’s performance comes after he shared a scene from his latest project, a new reality TV competition The Road, hosted by his mate Blake Shelton.
The pair laughed about some of Urban’s questionable hairstyles over the years, particularly the mullet.
In the first episode of the show, which features 12 up-and-coming artists hoping to open for Urban on his American tour, the Aussie star shared he struggled over the years being separated from his family while on tour.
‘When you wake up on a tour bus at 3:30 in the morning, sick as a dog, in the middle of nowhere, and you’ve got to play your fifth show that night … missing your friends, your family, completely lonely and miserable … You ask yourself, “Why am I doing this?” The only answer can be: Because this is what I’m born to do.’
Kidman filed for divorce in September after news of their split became public, ending their 19 years of marriage.
