James Blunt calls on British media “to be better” in treatment of Meghan Markle

Prince Harry’s mate James Blunt knows how to shoot down bullies on Twitter. Now, he is calling out the British media treatment of Meghan Markle.

Exclusive: He has been Prince Harry’s mate for several years and singer James Blunt is in the royal’s corner over his legal action against a British tabloid.

The You’re Beautiful chart-topper attended the Prince and Meghan Markle’s wedding last year with his wife Sofia Wellesley.

Blunt said while he wasn’t aware of the particulars of Prince Harry’s lawsuit, the singer believed Markle had been targeted negatively by the British media “unfairly, in my opinion”.

Blunt settled legal action against the News of the World in 2012 after it was discovered his voicemails had been accessed during the former tabloid’s phone hacking scandal.

“I have experienced that kind of (treatment) and the word is bullying, actually,” Blunt told News Corp.

“As humans, I think we can be better than that, whoever we are.”

The chart-topper and the Prince share military backgrounds, with Blunt serving in the British Army and seconded to the NATO forces during the Kosovo war.

He has been a supporter of the Prince’s Invictus Games and performed at the 2016 opening ceremony in Florida.

Renowned for his strong Twitter game against trolls, Blunt had a classic mic drop response to a sarcastic post about his presence at the games which heroes the resilience and courage of wounded soldiers.

“Prince Harry. By text. BOOM! RT @dinolauz: Who the f … invited James Blunt to the Invictus Games?” Blunt posted.

Blunt is counting down to the release of his new album Once Upon A Mind on October 25.

A regular visitor to Australia for his album launches and tours, he hopes to return early in the New Year to reconnect with his loyal fanbase here.

The new record is his most personal to date, with the first single Cold inspired by the consequences of leaving his family to do the job he loves.

Blunt and his wife share two young sons whose names have been kept private as they remain determined to bring them up out of the public eye.

“Cold is very much about that distance that I force, and the repercussions of that,” he said.

“You leave someone behind and it’s certainly not easy on them. It’s not easy on me either, but it’s harder on the person you leave behind, and leave them with a family to deal with as well.

“It’s a strange conundrum as a touring musician. That’s your job. But I’m a really hands-on family person.”
