MADONNA’S problem-plagued Rebel Heart tour has helped the pop star extend her record as the world’s top touring solo act.
The pop superstar wrapped up the world trek in Sydney last week after performing in Australia for the first time in 23 years.
She has become the highest grossing touring solo artist in the history of Billboard Boxscore, selling a total of over $1.73 billion AUD worth of tickets throughout her career.
Her Rebel Heart Tour earned $225 million AUD and sold more than a million tickets.
Madonna first earned the top solo touring distinction in 2009 after the conclusion of her Sticky & Sweet tour.
Bruce Springsteen surpassed her during his successful Wrecking Ball and High Hopes tours from 2012 through 2014, but now Madonna has taken back the title thanks to the success of her Rebel Heart dates.
And she’s now the third top grossing touring act (with groups taken into account) behind The Rolling Stones and U2 since tracking began in 1990.
Her Rebel Heart Tour kicked off on September 9 in Montreal, Canada, and culminated with 82 shows in 55 cities on four continents over seven months.
During the tour, Madonna visited several cities for the first time, including Bangkok, Hong Kong, Macau, Manila, Auckland, Taipei, Nashville, Omaha, and Louisville. She also performed multiple shows in New York, Turin, and Melbourne, and doubled up in Miami, Berlin, Barcelona, London, Paris, Tokyo, and Sydney.
Highlights included her moving tribute to her idol David Bowie during a show in Houston, Texas, and her tribute to the victims of the terrorist attacks in Paris during her show in Sweden on November 14.
Meanwhile, she brought a string of famous fans up onstage for her performance of Unapologetic B**ch including Katy Perry, Ariana Grande, Idris Elba, Jessica Chastain, and Amy Schumer, who opened for the Material Girl in New York.
She received rave reviews for much of the tour, but tardiness and reports of drunken behaviour onstage, which Madonna passed off as role playing, tainted the final weeks in Australia, as the singer battled her ex-husband Guy Ritchie for custody of their son Rocco.
The teenager, who was part of his mother’s touring entourage in 2015, visited his father in Britain for Christmas and refused to return home to New York.
