Bruce Springsteen predicts Donald Trump will lose US election but considers move to Australia if he wins

On the eve of the release of his new record and documentary, The Boss reaffirms his love affair with Australia and declares he’s “on the next plane” if Donald Trump is re-elected.

Bruce Springsteen confidently predicts Donald Trump will not retain the American presidency. But if the incumbent wins the November election, The Boss is “on the next plane” to Australia.

The Born In The USA legend zoomed in for a chat with Australian media on Thursday, ahead of the release of his new record Letter To You next week.

Springsteen will also release a new documentary which takes fans behind the scenes of the making of the record with the E Street Band in the home studio on his New Jersey farm.

The rock god chatted from that studio which he said was “designed and arranged” by his partner in music and life, Patti Scialfa.

When asked if he would contemplate relocating to Australia – where he rekindled a love affair with diehard fans over three tours between 2013 and 2017 – Springsteen laughed and said, “I would consider that”.

“I love Australia. Every time, we have nothing but good times down there. It’s alway a treat to come. Love the people, love the geography, great place for motorcycle trips, it’s close to our hearts,” he said.

“And if Trump is re-elected – which he will not be; I’m predicting right now he’s gonna lose – if by some happenstance he should be, I’ll see you on the next plane.”

The revered songwriter revealed several tracks on the new album were written on a guitar gifted to him by a mystery fan one night outside the stage door after a Springsteen on Broadway performance.

At first, The Boss thought the “young man” simply wanted him to autograph the beautifully crafted instrument.

“I looked at it and I could tell right away that it was beautifully made so I brought it home … and it played beautifully, it sounded gorgeous … and it had a variety of different types of wood, it was a real piece of craftsmanship,” he said.

“And so I left it in my living room. When I started to feel the urge to write, I just picked it up because it was such an easy play.

“Most of the songs came pouring out of it so I owe a debut to whoever that young man is. Instruments have power, in and of themselves.

“Guitars are inspirational and they do hold songs within them.”

As for his own magical powers as a songwriter, Springsteen said he still doesn’t understand where songs come from after more than five decades of penning some of the greatest musical pieces in rock’n’roll history.

And he remains terrified every time he sits down to start a new record the songs will stop coming.

“Songwriting is generally a terrifying and incredibly fulfilling experience,” he said.

“It’s terrifying because you never know if you are ever going to do it again because it’s a magic trick.

“How it happens, I don’t know. I’ve done it for 50 years (and) I don’t know how a song takes place and I don’t know anyone who’s ever been able to explain it because you pull something from nothing and you create something physical from it.”

Letter To You the record is out on October 23 with the documentary premiering on Apple TV the same day.
