AMERICAN pop star Beck readily admits his attempts to inspire Australians to flash mob dance with his own gangly moves during his upcoming tour could fail spectacularly.

AMERICAN pop shapeshifter Beck has designs on inciting a flash mob of dancing fans during his headlining performance at the inaugural Sydney City Limits and side shows.

The Grammy winning artist hopes songs from his last year’s acclaimed Colors album will do the trick.

He has offered incentive to potential dancers via the video for his single Wow, which features not only his own quirky, gangly moves but some adorable choreography from a troupe of young girls.

“If you’re talking about the Macarena, I love the story of those songs where somebody came up with the dance; it’s an entire category of songs,” he said ahead of this weekend’s gig.

“I have to mastermind one of the them. You also have to embrace the fact you may fail spectacularly. If you invite the world to dance and they don’t want to dance it is noticeable.”

Before the dancing, there should be singing.

Beck has a handful of alternative hits which loyal fans may want to sing along to from his breakthrough debut single Loser to the more recent Dreams.

Assisting the crowd karaoke moments will be the extra band mates he has employed for the Colors world tour, which starts in Australia, to highlight the harmonies of his latest record.

“People will sing along to one or two things I have but I have always admired that in other artists whether it’s Radiohead, Coldplay or the Strokes who have the songs people love to sing,” he said.

“I don’t think it was as much like that when I started; it’s grown over the last 15 years. I was trying to remedy the lack of material on my record like that with this record.”

SHANIA TWAIN: “I will always be an outsider”

The 47-year-old singer was at the centre of a Grammys controversy when he won Album of the Year in 2015 for his Morning Phase record and Kanye West suggested he should have given the award to Beyonce for her album.

He has since revealed West contacted him in the weeks after the awards to say he respected Beck’s record.

As well as the world tour, Beck said he has been working with Jakob Dylan on the Echo In The Canyon album and documentary about the California music scene of the mid 1960s which fostered the Beach Boys, The Byrds, The Mamas and the Papas.

Sydney City Limits will debut at Centennial Park on Saturday and also features Grace Jones, Vance Joy, Gang Of Youths, Tash Sultana, Justice and Phoenix.

Beck will also perform at the Royal theatre, Canberra on February 26 and Margaret Court Arena, Melbourne on February 28.
