AC/DC singer Brian Johnson has been told to stop touring immediately if he wants to salvage his hearing.
The band have confirmed they have postponed a string of shows starting with a gig in Atlanta tonight.
The statement reads “AC/DC are forced to reschedule the 10 upcoming dates on the U.S. leg of their Rock or Bust World Tour. AC/DC’s lead singer, Brian Johnson, has been advised by doctors to stop touring immediately or risk total hearing loss.”
AC/DC have dates running until April 4 at New York’s Madison Square Garden, then gigs in Europe and the UK through May and June. It is not known yet whether these will be postponed.
Surprisingly the band have said they plan to replace Johnson, 68, with a “guest vocalist” when they reschedule the American dates.
That would be the fourth singer to front AC/DC following Dave Evans and the late Bon Scott.
AC/DC are already two men down with founding member and songwriter Malcolm Young leaving the band after being diagnosed with dementia.
Drummer Phil Rudd was replaced with Charles Slade after being arrested on charges of threatening to kill and drug offences.
AC/DC played stadiums in Australia throughout November and December.
The Rock or Bust tour sold 2.3 million tickets last year, the year’s second most lucrative tour behind Taylor Swift’s 1989 tour.
The reports on Johnson’s health have again started rumours about the future of AC/DC, who are now operating with one original member, guitarist Angus Young.
Melbourne AC/DC fan and Cherry Bar owner James Young said his first thoughts were “can’t he just wear earplugs!”
However Young has suggested Joel O’Keeffe from Victorian rock band Airbourne as a possible replacement — the Warrnambool band have been heavily inspired by AC/DC.
“Joel is the ONLY one who’d be a chance for permanent inclusion in the band,” Young said.
Young also said Chris Cornell from Soundgarden. Mike Patton from Faith No More and Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters as other possible replacement vocalists for the remaining shows.
Cherry Bar is located in Melbourne’s iconic AC/DC Lane.
Brian Johnson joined AC/DC in 1980 after the death of Bon Scott.
