First trailer for James Gunn’s Superman released

Fans now have a proper look at director James Gunn’s first entry into the new DC universe, with the Superman trailer dropping overnight.

The trailer for director James Gunn’s first film in the new DC Universe was released overnight, giving fans their first proper look at actor David Corenswet in the iconic role of Superman.

And so far, so good: Initial reaction to the trailer has been overwhelmingly positive on social media.

The film stars Coronswet, most recently seen in a supporting role in Twisters, in the dual role of Superman and Clark Kent, alongside Marvelous Mrs Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Mad Max star Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

Fans will have to wait until July 2025 to see the film, but the trailer’s already piqued excitement.

“Normalize not being embarrassed about making comic book movies feel like comic book movies,” reads the top-rated comment on YouTube, where another agreed that the comic book feel of the trailer had them feeling “optimistic.”

“Well there’s definitely a lot going on in this trailer. I don’t know if the movie will be any good, but it certainly won’t be uneventful,” wrote another person on X.

“This trailer has a 1970s retro vibe with a touch of Christopher Reeve’s Superman. The bright look adds to its nostalgic charm,” another fan raved.

“Great Stuff!!! Can’t wait to see it, stacked with super heroes gives me justice league cartoon vibes,” enthused another.

Others praised this first look at the casting of the iconic roles, with one Superman fan saying of Brosnahan: “I feel like someone *finally* got the casting of Lois right.”

Superman will be director James Gunn’s first entry into the DC universe, after fellow director Zack Snyder issued films including Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice over the past decade, with British actor Henry Cavill donning the cape to play the flying superhero.
