A viral TikTok trend has caused chaos at a screening of A Minecraft Movie in Melbourne.
Movie goers at Eastland Hoyts in Ringwood were doused with a fire extinguisher and covered in flour and popcorn by rowdy teens taking part in the “chicken jockey” TikTok trend.
The bizarre phenomena involves young people erupting in cinemas when Jason Momoa’s character Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison fights a baby zombie who rides a chicken, known in the Minecraft world as a “chicken jockey”.
The Eastland Hoyts incident adds to a growing collection of videos online that show cinemas exploding into chaos after Jack Black’s character Steve says the words “chicken jockey”.
Melbourne mother Mel told 3AW that the Melbourne stunt, where a fire extinguisher was let off, left children crying and people frightened.
“It scared a lot of children, a lot of grandparents,” Mel said to hosts Mark Allen and Jimmy Bartel.
“You couldn’t breathe, you couldn’t swallow, the kids were choking, my kids were crying, their eyes were burning.”
“I don’t know where they got it from.
“And then, bang. We were completely doused in it.”
Mel told 3AW that Hoyts staff moved attendees who did not take part in the prank to a different cinema, where they continued playing the film.
While some videos depict teens throwing popcorn and yelling as part of the trend, more extreme pranksters have filmed themselves sneaking a live chicken into the cinema and letting off fireworks.
The “chicken jockey” trend has prompted cinema staff to check bags for items that might be used to disrupt the movie.
A Minecraft Movie – starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa – has taken the box office by storm, with Variety recently reporting the film has grossed US$500 million worldwide.
A Minecraft Movie is already the top grossing 2025 release at the Australian box office, having rung up nearly $30 million in its first two weeks on screens.
The film’s director, Jared Hess, told Entertainment Weekly that he enjoys the wacky response to the film.
“I’ve seen so many funny videos. It’s great … I’m just glad people are making memories with their friends and families.”
