Margot Robbie is set to bring The Sims to the big screen following her huge success with Barbie last year.
After bringing the iconic doll brand to the big screen to rave reviews and huge returns, Robbie is turning her sights as a producer on one of the most popular video games of all time.
The Sims, first released in 2000, became an international sensation and went on to become the one of the best selling games ever, selling a whopping 200 million copies and counting.
Director Kate Herron, best known for helming the first season of the Marvel series Loki, is set to take the reins on the project, with a screenplay co-written by Herron and Briony Redman.
The Sims is a life simulation computer game where players play as an avatar that has changeable personality traits, skills, and relationships, and goes through the mundane tasks of daily life like making dinner and decorating a home.
Much like Barbie, The Sims have no autonomy and the game has no specific narrative outside of players living out their fantasies through their avatars.
Currently no further details have been released about the project, and it’s yet to be revealed when the movie could hit cinemas.
Surprisingly, this isn’t the first time a movie based on The Sims has been in the works. Fox first planned to release a move back in 2007, but the project ended up in development hell and was officially cancelled in 2019 in the wake of the Disney-Fox merger.
Fans have been left divided by the news with some praising the announcement while others baffled about how the movie will work.
One tweeted: “OMG this better be true, I can’t wait!” while another echoed the sentiment, tweeting: “It’s gonna be as big as Barbie”.
However, others felt less enthused, with one tweeting: “How is this even going to work lol.”
Meanwhile, Robbie shocked fans by revealing that she intends to “disappear” from the big screen for a while.
“Everyone’s like, ‘Are you having a break?’ And I’m like, ‘You do know I’m a producer, right? We don’t get a break,’” she told Deadline. “I also think everyone’s probably sick of the sight of me for now. I should probably disappear from screens for a while.”
Robbie continued: “Honestly, if I did another movie too soon, people would say, ‘Her again? We just did a whole summer with her. We’re over it.’ I don’t know what I’ll do next, but I hope it’s a little while away.”
