Directed by Pablo Larraín, the film will follow the late royal in December of 1991, as her marriage to Prince Charles is falling apart. Charles and Diana split in 1992 and formally divorced in 1996. She tragically died in a car accident in 1997.
According to a studio press release, principal photography for the film has begun in Germany and the UK. It’s expected to hit theatres in the fall of this year.
Stewart’s casting was announced in June of last year. The Happiest Season and Twilight actress, 30, is the same age as Diana at the time the movie takes place.

Actors Sally Hawkins, Timothy Spall and Sean Harris will be joining Stewart. There’s no word on who will portray young Prince William, although a casting call specifically required a European, not UK-born actor for the role.
“Spencer is a dive inside an emotional imagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life,” said Stewart, in the release. “It is a physical assertion of the sum of her parts, which starts with her given name; Spencer. It is a harrowing effort for her to return to herself, as Diana strives to hold onto what the name Spencer means to her.”

The holiday weekend the movie is set in is the time when Season 4 of The Crown left off. Newcomer Emma Corrin portrayed Diana in the Netflix series, which was released in November. Next season, she will be replaced by Elizabeth Debicki.
Larraín also directed 2016’s Oscar-nominated Jackie, starring Natalie Portman as First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy.
