A heartbreaking scene from a film starring Aubrey Plaza has resurfaced as fans say the tragic death of her husband in real life now makes it all the more devastating to watch.
Plaza’s director and writer husband Jeff Baena unexpectedly died at age 47 on January 3.
It was only in September the actress’ new film My Old Ass was released, where her character reveals to her younger self that the love of her life dies.
The coming-of-age comedy drama film on Amazon Prime Video sees 18-year-old Elliott, played by Maisy Stella, meet her 39-year-old self, played by Plaza.
Future Elliott warns younger Elliott to stay away from a boy named Chad, but after starting to fall in love despite her best efforts, younger Elliott demands answers, begging future Elliott to tell her what he did.
“He died. That’s what he did. Chad dies. And he dies after you have fallen so madly in love with him that you can’t see straight, okay? After you can’t imagine loving anybody else ever again,” she says.
“And no, you can’t save him. I know that’s what you’re going to say, but no, you can’t save him. There’s nothing you can do.”
Future Elliott explains she told her younger self to stay away from him because “it is so, so hard” when he dies, and she doesn’t want herself to go through that.
Her younger self decides to fall in love with Chad anyway, promising to “love him so hard for however long we have”.
She explains being “young and dumb” is a good thing because it lets her be brave enough to live without being plagued by thoughts about how unfair life might be in the future.
A TikTok of the scene uploaded after Baena’s death has been viewed more than a million times.
“Watching this movie after finding out Aubrey Plaza’s husband passed away today,” a caption on the video said, with a broken heart emoji.
Many fans said the film was the first thing they thought of when they heard the tragic news over the weekend.
“I thought of this immediately. Did a movie where the entire premise is to try to protect yourself from the kind of pain she is now forced to live,” said one person.
“I’m glad this movie is finally getting the attention it deserves, sucks that it is under these circumstances though,” wrote another. “I can’t even imagine how Aubrey Plaza must feel.”
“This scene already made me weep uncontrollably. I can never watch this movie again,” added another devastated fan.
One top comment with over 16,000 likes read: “Honestly, I guarantee her filming this made them have conversations that she is glad they had in retrospect.”
Baena took his own life, according to the Los Angeles county medical examiner.
Plaza and Baena married on their 10-year anniversary in 2020.
