From Devil Wears Prada and Toy Story, to Avengers and Dune: Mega movie sequels are coming to cinemas soon
Hollywood is betting big on nostalgia with a dozen major sequels announced for 2026, including the return of Miranda Priestly and Iron Man's Robert Downey Jr in villain mode.
Hollywood is rolling out the red carpet for a slate of sequels – or should we say, sequels to sequels – in a bid to lure audiences back into cinemas and recapture that big-screen magic and a big dollar profit.
With streaming services changing the way we consume movies, and with original films performing poorly at the box office, it’s no wonder Hollywood is sticking to its tried and true formula of cranking out sequels, remakes and reboots with characters we already know and love. Or love to hate.
Here’s a list of (expensively-made) sequels coming your way very soon.
THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2
Get ready, The Devil, aka Miranda Priestly, is back.
Based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2013 novel Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns, this sequel catches up with the characters from the wildly popular 2006 hit, The Devil Wears Prada.
The new film reportedly pits Miranda Priestly against her former assistant Emily Charlton as they compete for revenue as print media declines.
All your favourites are returning for the second round, including Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci.
Lucy Liu, Justin Theroux, Australia’s own Patrick Brammall and Bridgerton’s Simone Ashley round out part of the new cast members.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 makes its fashionable entry into cinemas on May 1, 2026.
TOY STORY 5
Toy Story 1, 2 and 3 were widely considered a perfect trilogy, ending on a high note that left no dry eye in the house. Naturally, the powers-that-be opted to continue the story with Toy Story 4. Given that the merchandising alone has netted Disney billions – significantly more than the films themselves – it’s no shock that a fifth instalment is on the way.
Toy Story 5 will feature many of the original voice cast, including Tom Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, Joan Cusack as cowgirl Jessie and Blake Clark as Slinky Dog.
The plot delves into the impact of modern technology, as the traditional toys struggle to stay relevant when their owner, Bonnie, becomes obsessed with a new tablet named Lily Pad, voiced by Anna Faris.
Toy Story 5 will be released to infinity and beyond on June 19, 2026.
SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY
After 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home ended on a major cliffhanger, fans have been eagerly awaiting the next chapter.
The fourth instalment, titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day, brings back Tom Holland as everyone’s favourite neighbourhood Spider-Man, his real-life partner Zendaya as MJ and Jacob Batalon as best friend Ned.
New cast members include Sadie Sink (from Stranger Things) and Jon Bernthal as The Punisher/Frank Castle. Bernthal has played The Punisher in other Marvel shows.
Details of the plot have been a closely-guarded secret, with no confirmation of what character Sink is even playing.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day slings into cinemas on July 31, 2026.
AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY
Featuring every actor under the sun – including (but certainly not limited to) Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Florence Pugh, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan, Pedro Pascal, Channing Tatum, James Marsden, Vanessa Kirby and Kelsey Grammer, Avengers: Doomsday has one hell of a budget.
Disney is certainly hoping the film revives the franchise, since several other movies and shows in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) have not been well-received by fans.
While specific plot details are scarce, the major news is that Downey Jr. will play the main villain, Doctor Doom.
Downey Jr. famously played the iconic Tony Stark/Iron Man before his character died in Avengers: Endgame. The explanation for the same actor playing two major characters in the same universe is anyone’s guess but, given the film is set in the final phase of the multi-verse saga, the rules of a ‘single universe’ probably don’t apply here.
Avengers: Doomsday releases across every universe on December 18, 2026.
FAST X: PART 2
The 12th film in the Fast and the Furious franchise is slated as the last … in the current timeline, that is. Spin-offs will surely follow – fast and furiously.
The concluding film sees the return of most of the regular cast, including Vin Diesel, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster.
The character of Brian O’Conner, played by the late actor Paul Walker, is also set to make a return. O’Conner was written out (but not killed off) in the seventh film after Walker died in 2013, with his actor brothers playing body-doubles. It is likely the same will happen in this last instalment.
Fast X: Part 2 races into cinemas in April 2027.
THE HUNGER GAMES: SUNRISE ON THE REAPING
Sunrise on the Reaping is the sequel to 2023’s The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, starring Rachel Ziegler. Both films serve as prequels to the original The Hunger Games trilogy (2012-2015), which featured Jennifer Lawrence as heroine Katniss Everdeen.
Sunrise is set 24 years before Katniss made her mark and follows the origin story of Haymitch Abernathy, who was played by Woody Harrelson in the original films. In this sequel to the prequel to the original, Haymitch is played by Aussie Joseph Zada.
A host of famous faces also star, including Elle Fanning, Jessie Plemons, the ubiquitous Mckenna Grace, Glenn Close, Maya Hawke, Kieran Culkin and Ralph Fiennes.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping plays in all districts on November 20, 2026.
SCREAM 7
After dipping out of Scream 6 due to a salary dispute, actor Neve Campbell makes a somewhat triumphant return to this enduring horror franchise in the seventh film.
Would Campbell have even been approached to return if production company Spyglass Entertainment had not fired main actor Melissa Barrera for perceived ‘hate speech’? We will likely never know.
Both Barrera and Jenna Ortega, who played the Carpenter sisters very successfully in Scream 5 and 6, will not appear in Scream 7.
Aside from Campbell as Sidney Prescott, the sequel also features Mckenna Grace (she is in EVERYTHING) and Anna Camp, and sees the return of Skeet Ulrich, Matthew Lillard, David Arquette and Scott Foley, whose characters all died in previous Screams.
Scream 7 slashes into cinemas on February 27, 2026.
GREENLAND 2: MIGRATION
The sequel to well-received 2020 apocalyptic survival film Greenland is set five years after a comet decimates most of earth.
Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin return as the husband and wife duo who made it to Greenland, the safe zone, with their son.
In Migration, the family have to leave the safety of Greenland and travel across dangerous lands to find a new home.
Greenland 2: Migration explodes into cinemas on January 9, 2026.
MORTAL KOMBAT II
Based on the popular video game, Mortal Kombat II is the sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat, which itself is a reboot of the franchise that started in 1995.
The plot of the martial arts fantasy film is a little blurry (something about the mortal realm and Earth’s defenders and villain Shao Khan), but you can bet there will be lots of fighting, maybe some bad CGI and the words “Get over here!” will be uttered at least once.
The Boys’ Karl Urban joins the returning cast, which includes Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin and Lewis Tan.
Mortal Kombat II battles into cinemas on May 8, 2026.
JUMANJI 3
The final film in the rebooted Jumanji franchise picks up where the last movie – 2019’s Jumanji: The Next Level – left off, with the animals from the Jumanji game loose in the real world.
The original 1995 film, starring Robin Williams and Kirsten Dunst, was based on a 1981 picture book. The blockbuster received mixed reviews on its release but was a hit at the box office and is now recognised as one of the most popular family films of all time.
In 2017’s reboot Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, the film paid tribute to Williams’ character.
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Jack Black, Nick Jonas, Rhys Darby and Danny DeVito are all returning for this last instalment.
Jumanji 3 stampedes into cinemas on December 11, 2026.
DUNE: PART THREE
The conclusion to the Dune trilogy picks up 12 years after the events of 2024’s Dune: Part Two.
It follows the story of Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) as he reigns as Emperor, and his relationship with Chani (Zendaya).
The space opera is based on Frank Herbert’s novel Dune Messiah, which is the second novel out of six. However, while there is more story to explore, director Denis Villeneuve has confirmed this film is the last … for him, at least.
Dune: Part Three spices up cinemas on December 18, 2026.
MINIONS 3
There are reports that at a recent test screening of Minions 3, someone illegally recorded the film’s entire audio and released it on the internet.
Before the leak, not much was known about the third instalment in the Minions film series and the seventh overall of the Despicable Me franchise. Now, there are reports it is apparently titled Minions & Monsters, and focuses on the minions trying to become filmmakers.
Whatever happens from the leaked audio, the sequel is bound to still make millions at the box office due to the yellow creatures’ incredible popularity.
Minions 3 dances adorably into cinemas on July 1, 2026.
