Mortal Kombat 2: Queensland set to star as filming location, boosting local economy

The highly anticipated movie sequel, Mortal Kombat 2, has selected Queensland as its filming location, promising a $68m boost to the state’s economy, and creating 560 jobs.

Queensland has snagged the highly-anticipated sequel to Mortal Kombat, with cameras set to start rolling on the movie next month.

Mortal Kombat 2, which is slated for production at Gold Coast’s Village Roadshow Studios, follows the successful 2021 blockbuster shot in South Australia.

The film is set to provide a significant boost to the Queensland economy, generating $68 million and create 560 jobs after it was secured by the State Government’s Production Attraction Strategy.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said Queensland had proven itself as a leading global production hub.

“Queensland has firmly established itself as a leading global production hub, suited to all productions from Hollywood blockbusters right through to homegrown stories,” she said.

“With an estimated local spend of more than $68 million, Mortal Kombat 2 is a heavy hitter for the state’s economy, creating at least 560 jobs for Queensland cast and crew.”

Producer James Wan said he excited to showcase Queensland’s talent and majestic locations.

“Filming the first film in Australia was such a great experience, I’m thrilled that with the help

of Screen Australia and Screen Queensland, we can show off the majestic locations of

Queensland and work with the top-notch artistic talent based there.” he said.

His sentiments were echoed by co-producer Todd Garner, who lauded Queensland as a “premier destination for filmmaking.”

Industry rumours suggest the sequel will introduce fan-favourite Johnny Cage, who would potentially be portrayed by New Zealand actor Karl Urban.

Additionally, Jessica McNamee, who portrayed Sonya Blade in the first filmed is reportedly back for the sequel according to the film online database IMDB.
