Bella Mackenzie, who just finished year 12 at Mackay’s Holy Spirit College, is back at Groundwater for the second year running, performing three gigs across the weekend at the festival where the bush meets the beach on the Gold Coast.

The 17-year-old stands apart from the country crowd with a love of fashion and eye-catching outfits not often seen in a world of the drab grey, blue, black and brown wardrobe favoured by many country artists.

“I love fashion and I like bright colours, so it’s not your typical cowboy hats and jeans,” she said.

Bella, who won a slot on last year’s festival in a talent competition, impressed organisers enough to be invited to perform again this year.

With school now in the rear view mirror, Bella hopes to focus on her country music dream, with plans to spend the next few months writing songs before a visit to the American country music capital of Nashville.

“Moving to Nashville would be a dream so I’m hoping to get over there next year for a visit to meet a few people and improve my craft,” she said.

After kicking off on Friday, Groundwater runs across the weekend in Broadbeach, with country royalty Gina Jeffreys, Fanny Lumsden and Catherine Britt among the headline acts.
