Thousands of kids in the 1990s fell in love with a quirky television series about a young music prodigy dumped in the middle of the Aussie outback who just happens to be the secret love child of Elvis Presley.

Now over 25 years later, Li’l Elvis Jones and the Truckstoppers has been adapted into a musical stage show and is making its theatre debut this week at Brisbane Powerhouse.

Directed by Madison Thew-Keyworth, the show is an exciting homage to everything that made the original series magical.

Featuring a cast spanning multiple generations, the youngest performer is just 12 years old.

Ms Thew-Keyworth said it has been a joy to help the young stars find their voices in the characters.

“It’s been a fantastic experience. These children have been so enthusiastic and professional,” she said.

Describing the show as heartfelt, she said there’s something for everyone in the show.

“There’s something delicious about laughing along with the villains and because they’re cartoon villains they are funny and playful,” she said.

Speaking about the progressive themes at the centre of the TV series, Ms Thew-Keyworth said the storylines from the original series will still resonate with the audience now.

“(The TV series) explores themes about land rights, environment and relations with the First Nations community. The story from over 25 years ago is really relevant today.”

At only 14 years old, Aiden McIntyre steps into the role of Li’l Elvis effortlessly, with the teen admitting he shares a special musical connection with his character.

“I play in a band (in real life) with a lot of my friends so it’s really cool to live that. I’m finding my own scope on the character and figuring out how I work with it in general,” he said.

You can see Li’l Elvis Jones and the Truckstoppers The Musical for a limited time at Brisbane Powerhouse.
