Gaga was praised for her nine minute, eight song medley of hits at last night’s ceremony, which saw her channel Ziggy Stardust with elaborate eye make-up, bright orange hair and an embellished white jumpsuit.

She was joined on stage by Nile Rodgers, who produced David’s classic 1983 album Let’s Dance.

But Duncan, a Bafta winning director, made his thoughts on the performance clear with a subtle Twitter jibe.

Posting the dictionary definition of the word “gaga”, he tweeted: “’Overexcited or irrational, typically as a result of infatuation or excessive enthusiasm; mentally confused.’ Damn it! What IS that word!?”

The tweet angered a lot of Lady Gaga’s fans.

Overall, Gaga’s performance got a thumbs up from celeb fans.

Singer Bette Midler tweeted: “Lady Gaga slays it!!! And there’s the great #nilerogers ... David Bowie lives. God, I miss him.”

Actress Reese Witherspoon added, “that Bowie tribute gave me chills”, while Ellen DeGeneres wrote: “That was so great. You’re always going to another level.”

Gaga paid another personal tribute to Bowie just ahead of the Grammys when she went under the needle to get a tattoo of the rock legend on her torso.
