KELLY Clarkson’s emotional speech at the 2006 Grammys took on a whole new meaning after the singer revealed she had been wrongly diagnosed with cancer the same day as the awards.
Speaking to Billboard’s Pop Shop Podcast, the musician, who won two Grammys at the 2006 awards, said her whole experience was ruined after a doctor mixed up test results and told her she had cancer.
When asked what her 2006 Grammy experience was like, Clarkson revealed, “not many people know this and not to be a Debbie Downer but I was told that morning that I had cancerous results and I was completely freaking out.”
“Then when I won I thought ‘Oh my God, this is like God giving me one cool thing before something horrible happens,’” she added.
The singer admitted she was crying the whole day and her team had to “redo my makeup like four times.”
When accepting her first Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Clarkson sobbed on stage.
“Just, thank you so much, you have no idea what this means to me, so thank you so much,” she said.
Despite the mix-up being sorted the following day, the Idol alum was still furious.
“I went to the doctor’s the next day and they apologised for mixing up results. And I was like, ‘Are you for real?! You completely ruined my whole experience’ … It was kind of the worst/greatest day … A lot of the moments got stolen from that mishap, but hey, I didn’t have cancer! … I don’t even remember anything but being terrified.”
Luckily, she would go on to win the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album again in 2013 for her album Stronger which made her the first and only artist to win the award more than once.
Clarkson, who was the original winner of the hit show American Idol, is also headed to this year’s Grammys after she was nominated for her live performance of Piece by Piece.
She did the Grammy-nominated performance on American Idol, the show that propelled her to instant stardom.
The nomination is Clarkson’s 13th and she spoke to Billboard about what it felt like.
“It’s pretty special that it’s this specific version purely because it’s such an intimate lyric,” she said.
“Also it’s such a bookend for me. It was where I got my start and it was when the show finished,” she added.
