Hugh Sheridan has revealed a couple slipped him the date rape drug rohypnol five years ago.
The actor told 88.3fm radio program Sounds Good With Donna Demaio, set to air on Tuesday evening, that he knew one of the pair who drugged him, the Daily Telegraph reported.
“A few years ago, this is a true story … I actually got … someone drugged me, two people drugged me, and I knew one of them,” he told the show.
He confirmed it was a “roofie situation”, indicating he was unwittingly given the drug.
“I was stuck for eight hours, but I managed to get out,” he said.
Sheridan said it was a “scary situation” which he never thought he would find himself in.
Once the drugs began to wear off, he struggled to understand what had happened.
“I just kept saying ‘As if!’ It was like, ‘Oh my God, how could this be happening to me? How could this situation happen? What do they think they’re getting away with?’,” he said.
He woke up at a home in Double Bay, in Sydney’s east, and despite not having his phone, wallet or shoes, knew he “had to escape”.
Sheridan said he didn’t have any recollection of what happened to him while he was unconscious, but he eventually made his way to his sister’s house in Randwick.
Too scared to go back himself, he told her how to get there and she went and collected his things.
“She went (to the property), [and said] ‘I am here for my brother’s things’, and marched on in, and got my stuff. I was very scared, but she wasn’t. She’s very tough, my sister,” he said.
He ultimately chose not to file a police complaint, describing the couple as “manipulative”.
Sheridan added that he finally felt comfortable enough disclosing what happened, saying he felt it was important for him to “shine a light on it”.
He is currently in Melbourne headlining the Broadway musical Tick Tick … Boom! which is set to play at the Comedy Theatre from February 1 to 12.
