Get ready to bid for a $10 ticket to see Hamilton the musical

Global smash-hit musical Hamilton hits the Brisbane stage this month, but if you’ve struggled to get tickets or just can’t afford them, here’s how you can score some for just $10.

Bringing Hamilton to Australia was 'the one shining light' through COVID-19

Having a $10 digital ticket lottery to the hit musical Hamilton sounds like a great idea and those who have been hanging out to see the show in Brisbane agree.

American producer Jeffrey Seller and Australian producer Michael Cassel have confirmed the $10 digital ticket lottery that has been so successful in the US, Sydney and Melbourne will continue for the Brisbane season which begins in the Lyric Theatre at QPAC on January 27.

The digital lottery, known in the US as Ham4Ham, will make a limited number of tickets available for every performance at just $10 each. The lottery ticket program was crated by Seller to provide accessible and affordable tickets to shows.

“My proudest achievement was making tickets available for people who had little money,” Seller says.

“I was 31 years old. I really could barely afford a full-price Broadway ticket at that point in my life. So my business partner, Kevin McCollum, and I were resolute that we had to really help people like us to make sure they could go see the show. And that’s when we came upon this fun idea.

“I’m happy to say that it’s a tradition that lives on on Broadway today at shows like Hamilton. The show’s creator Lin Manuel-Miranda said to me that we have to do it for Hamilton in Australia.

“These are not just tickets for students though, we don‘t want to discriminate by age. I thought, what about all the people who aren’t college students? This lottery is for everybody.”

Seller said he wished he could come to Brisbane for Hamilton’s last season in Australia but he’s busy putting on a new version of Sweeney Todd on Broadway.

“I have never been to Brisbane besides passing through the airport,” Seller says. “I hear Brisbane audiences are known for partying and every show there is a party so let’s make sure that happens this time.”

For Hamilton wannabes it’s a boon and they want to be in it to win it.

Nova 106.9’s Jonah Bobongie is a musical theatre fan who has been watching Hamilton on Disney +.

“I wanted to see it in America but it was sold out,” Bobongie says. “I love the lottery idea and I will have a go, absolutely.”

Digital content creator Aicha Robertson says she will be trying for a ticket too and telling all her friends to do the same.

“It makes it super accessible,” she says.

Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, R & B and Broadway, Hamilton has taken the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and created a revolutionary moment in theatre – a musical that has had a profound impact on culture, politics and education.

With book, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler and musical supervision and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire it is based on Ron Chernow’s acclaimed biography and is one the most unlikely hit of the past decade.
