Nitro Circus’ Nitro World Games ticket holders have been left furious after they were given just 20 minutes’ notice the event they were attending at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday was cancelled.
There are claims the cancellation was confirmed on social media half an hour before those who’d already arrived and were seated in the stadium were told.
Nitro Circus’ Nitro World Games were set to draw massive crowds to the Cauldron to watch “the best in FMX, BMX, skateboarding, and scooter battle for championship honours while pushing the limits of progression with record-breaking attempts.”
But with severe weather buffeting South East Queensland on Saturday, organisers made the decision to cancel Saturday afternoon and Sunday’s events.
“All ticket holders for either Saturday or Sunday will have their tickets transferred to Monday. Ticketek will be in touch with all account holders with full details in the next 24 hours,” venue Suncorp Stadium told ticket holders on behalf of Nitro World Games.
But many ticket holders have blasted organisers for their lack of communication, claiming the announcement should have been made earlier.
“We were all sitting in our seats, we’d made the commitment and effort to come along but then they waited until the absolute last minute,” ticket holder Emma said.
“We’ve spent nearly $800 on these tickets and so we were prepared for a little bit of rain, but if they were going to cancel it I don’t understand why they waited until right before it started… I could have understood it if they cancelled it earlier that morning.”
Emma said she had purchased tickets for two adults and four kids totalling $780, and on Sunday morning was having trouble getting a refund from Ticketek and also claimed the organisation had changed the terms and conditions.
“They had always said Tuesday and Wednesday were the reserve days and that if we weren’t free then you might find it hard to get a refund, but when we went to check after they cancelled Saturday afternoon we saw it now said only Monday,” Emma said.
“So I want to know why – why they changed those dates, and does that mean we pay for two days and get one?”
“There’s been no answers.”
Emma said her family were seeking a refund for their tickets, but said Ticketek’s customer service hotline “kept hanging up on us after an automated voice talked for a bit.”
Social media was also awash with disgruntled ticket holders, with many questioning what would happen if rain persisted on Monday.
“What if it’s raining Monday after trying to get the day off at short notice? Are you going to cancel at 3.30 Monday,” one woman wrote.
Others vented their anger about lost travel expenses, with many making their way to Brisbane over the weekend for the event but unable to stay into the work week.
“Yeah, I’ll be at home in a different state,” Laura West wrote in response to the date change announcement, while even some who live in Brisbane said they would likely be unable to attend the new date.
“Everyone has to travel with their children again to the venue after school… way too much for children on school nights,” Grant White said.
Brisbane’s severe weather is forecast to have started clearing by 4pm Monday, but there is still a 70 per cent chance of showers and a possible thunderstorm expected.
Nitro Circus CEO Joe Carr has apologised for any disruption that the cancellation may have caused.
“We just want to apologise and we are equally as frustrated and it’s very disappointing for us. We were excited and hopeful to have a big weekend, both Saturday and Sunday, but the weather has been moving rapidly,” Mr Carr said.
“There was a weather advisory that was pushed out by the city and we didn’t want people to get caught in even worse weather on the ride home. We did the best we could.
“We are moving both Saturday and Sunday’s program to Monday, so we’re basically going to fit in two days’ worth of events into one day. It’ll be a slighter longer day on Monday…. It’s going to be a tremendous day and a ton of action.”
Mr Carr also responded to claims that the reserve dates had been changed, and why it would’ve been more “disruptive” to hold the rescheduled event over two days.
“This event was originally supposed to take place last year in 2021, so those reserve days were always Monday-Tuesday. If you look at those dates in 2021, those are the Monday-Tuesday of October.
“Just to be clear, we offered refunds at the time when we moved it from 2021 to 2022. We actually had a fair amount of refunds at that point.
“The reserve days were always Monday-Tuesday, and we thought it was best for the fans to combine everything and have it on Monday.
“The further you get into the week, the more difficult it will be, especially for people that have travelled and were here for the weekend.
“The forecast looks clear for (Monday), whereas it looks like there’s gonna be weather again on Tuesday.”
