Hundreds of Teddy Swims fans packed inside The Triffid at Newstead on Sunday for a free acoustic show with the US singer and his “Aussie friends”, raising $3610 for the Children’s Hospital Foundation through a raffle to win a signed guitar.
Swims announced the surprise concert on social media just two hours before taking the stage, sending fans rushing to the venue for a chance to see him up close.
Superfan Mandy Kunde, 45, was just five minutes from the venue when the post went up.
Despite seeing him perform the night before, she said she would have driven an hour from her Burpengary home if she hadn’t already been in the city.
For 29-year-old Dana Wearne, the impromptu show was a chance to see Swims live after missing out on tickets to his Brisbane Entertainment Centre concerts.
“It was such a nice surprise,” she said. “Lucky we were on Instagram at the time.”
Sydney singer Pace Randolph and Brisbane’s Inoxia, who both went viral after performing Lose Control with Swims in July 2024, joined him on stage for the stripped-back set.
ARIA Award-winning artist Budjerah also performed after flying in from Cairns on just three hours’ sleep, telling fans he barely made it in time for the show.
Swims performed shortly after 1pm, with acoustic renditions of All That Really Matters, Bad Dreams, The Door and Lose Control, earning cheers from the packed crowd.
“Wow, if I got three hours of sleep, I wouldn’t be here,” Swims joked, praising Budjerah’s effort.
A newly engaged fan took home the signed guitar in the raffle, with Swims closing the show by thanking the Brisbane crowd for their support.
