Emmys 2018: Winners revealed as Hannah Gadsby steals the show

AUSTRALIAN comedian Hannah Gadsby’s cameo at the Emmys has impressed Hollywood, as Game of Thrones took out more gongs. SEE THE FULL WINNERS LIST.

Emmy Awards 2018: Winners, Shocks & Snubs

AUSTRALIAN comedian Hannah Gadsby made a huge impact as a presenter at the Emmys, as Game of Thrones veteran Peter Dinklage claimed a win.

Some viewers suggested Tassie-raised stand-up Gadsby, 40, of hit Netflix special Nanette, should host the Emmys next year.

“Nobody knows what jokes are these days, especially men... That’s why I’m presenting alone,” Gadsby said with her deadpanned humour, as she presented the Emmy for Outstanding Direction to Stephen Daldry, of The Crown.

He was not there to accept the award. But after announcing his name, she said: “So I think I just leave now … and well done him”, as she walked away from the mic, leaving the audience in laughter.

Gadsby made the Emmys stage her latest platform for shock comedy, winning laughs and a few awkward glances when she presented the award for Best Direction in a Drama.

Gadsby walked sheepishly to the microphone and, looking out over the A-list audience, declared: “This is not normal.”

“The world’s gone a bit crazy,” she added.

The gay performer joked “hating men” had taken her places, before reassuring the men in the audience it was “just a joke, fellas,” adding the hashtag “#NotAllMenButALotOfThem.”

“For somebody like me, a nobody from nowhere, gets this sweet gig, free suit, new boots uh, just cos I don’t like men,” she told the audience.

“That’s a joke of course, just jokes fellas, calm down.”

Her stunning one-hour Netflix special explores her experience as a lesbian, as well as a devastating sexual assault she survived as a young woman.

Gadsby used the TV show to declare she was walking away from her self-deprecating style of comedy because it required her to diminish herself for laughs — an act she wasn’t prepared to continue to do at the expense of her esteem and emotional health.

The response to the brave special, however, means her career is only now taking off — with the 40-year-old moving to Hollywood to explore the very many work opportunities now being offered to her since the global success of Nanette (named after a smalltown barista she briefly encountered).

Meantime, Dinklage, 49, was named Best Supporting Actor in a drama for his role in GoT, making it his third Emmy win (from seven nominations) for his role as Tyrion Lannister.

Game Of Thrones also took out the most coveted gong for Best Drama Series.

Another notable victory was veteran actor Henry Winkler, who was named Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy in Barry.

“If you stay at the table long enough, the chips come to you. Tonight, I got to clear the table,” Winkler said, as he received a standing ovation. It was the first time Winkler was recognised by the Emmys for his acting, after being nominated three times.
