Brisbane-born Hollywood heart-throb Jacob Elordi has used the Melbourne premiere of his latest TV project The Narrow Road To The Deep North to make a bold statement — not about acting, but about fish.
The Saltburn and Euphoria star, 27, turned heads on the red carpet at Palace Cinema Como on Wednesday night, wearing a black T-shirt emblazoned with the slogan: “Eating salmon? Killing Tasmania.”
The shirt is part of a protest campaign by Neighbours of Fish Farming (NOFF), a group raising awareness about alleged environmental damage caused by Tasmania’s salmon industry, including high mortality rates and pollution.
The protest was a co-ordinated effort, with Elordi joined on the carpet by director Justin Kurzel and Tasmanian author Richard Flanagan — whose novel inspired the Amazon Prime miniseries.
Flanagan is also behind Toxic: The Rotting Underbelly of the Tasmanian Salmon Industry, a searing exposé of the environmental damage linked to industrial fish farming.
While fellow cast members including Olivia DeJonge and Essie Davis brought red carpet polish, it was Elordi’s politically charged wardrobe choice that drew the most attention.
Independent candidate for the federal seat of Franklin, Peter George, was in attendance and praised the display on social media, saying “if ever the world was going to get the message, this is it.”
NOFF echoed the sentiment online, writing: “The premiere was owned by Tasmanians director Justin Kurzel and Author Richard Flanagan all wearing the slogan. … we will have more available in the coming days.”
