Kyle Sandilands and Jackie “O” Henderson have addressed the radio rivalry that has escalated between them and other stations since news broke last year that their popular Sydney show would also broadcast in Melbourne.
The KIIS FM duo shared their thoughts on the subject this morning on The Kyle & Jackie O Show when asked about an article titled ‘Keeping Up With Kiss’, which appeared to highlight the copycat tactics from competing radio stations in Melbourne, particularly from Fifi, Fev & Nick on The Fox network.
The show’s producers informed Sandilands and Henderson on-air of all the antics they’ve done on the show that have allegedly been ripped off by their rivals.
Everything from their competitions to their graphics on social media have allegedly been swiped by their opposition.
Most recently, local musician DJ Cyril even made an appearance at The Fox despite having just made a cameo at K&J HQ.
“Someone wrote an article saying this radio station is copying everything, We’re doing The Noise, they’re doing the Secret Sounds,” Sandilands said. “Oh that’s not cool. They even got Cyril to do a live DJ set last week.”
“What, they got my Cyril?” joked Henderson.
“We’re under their skin, they’re scampering. I love it,” he concluded.
Sandilands said that this is what happens when rivals get “nervous”.
“I’ve heard some people saying they’re trying to do edgier content,” he said. “I would suggest that all other radio stations just do what you’ve always been doing, that lacklustre, no appointment listening. You know, all the laughing, all that sh*t.”
However, Henderson took the high road in the end, saying she doesn’t subscribe to the feud because it’s “dumb”.
“See, I don’t know if I enjoy the competitiveness and find it funny, or whether I find it ridiculous,” she shared.
“Because I feel like, you know, as a grown adult, I don’t really want to be involved in these dumb games.”
Earlier this month, Sandilands hit out at Jason Hawkins and Lauren Phillips, who were dropped last November from the Melbourne KIIS FM roster to make room for The Kyle & Jackie O Show.
Hawkins and Philips have since been hired to front the Jase and Lauren show on Nova, but their big push to get listeners has been allegedly impaired by The Kyle & Jackie O Show.
The pair couldn’t hide their frustration as a bus emblazoned with the faces of Sandilands and Henderson crashed their show in early May – their very first broadcast for Nova.
“It’s pretty poor form, though, to turn up to our event,” Phillips later said on-air.
“Because I mean, they fired us. We haven’t done anything wrong to them. They got rid of us, told us we weren’t good enough. And now they’re turning up to where we’re standing there with the people that love our show and listen to our show, and trying to sabotage that. It’s a bit tasteless.”
Sandilands caught wind of the comment and quickly labelled the duo “cry babies”.
