Close “friends” of pop icon Taylor Swift and British actor Joe Alwyn have revealed why the couple separated after six years.
The large “differences in their personalities” made them not “the right fit for one another”, according to anonymous sources close to the couple quoted by People Magazine.
“They’ve had rough patches before and always worked things out, so friends thought they would take some time apart but eventually come back together,” the source said.
While the couple has not officially addressed the break-up, multiple sources told People they split apart due to struggles with fame after the lifting of Covid lockdowns, despite “talking about marriage as recently as a few months ago”.
“They had plenty in common and fell in love in a safe bubble while she was retreating from the world during Reputation,” they said.
“Then the pandemic hit, and they were locked down together and able to continue growing their relationship in this insulated way. But he didn’t really ‘know’ her yet outside of that bubble,” they continued.
“Joe has struggled with Taylor’s level of fame and the attention from the public.
“The differences in their personalities have also become harder to ignore after years together. They’ve grown apart.”
Another insider appeared to suggest that Swift was behind the split, saying “Taylor didn’t see them working out in the long run.”
“They are friendly. She doesn’t have anything bad to say about Joe,” they said. “They just grew apart. Taylor is staying very focused on her tour right now.”
A separate source told the DailyMail.com the “difficulties” in their relationship appeared when Taylor’s career took priority over Joe’s.
“This drove them apart and ultimately, they both realised they were not on the same page anymore,” the source said.
“It’s been hard for Joe trying to make it in Hollywood and not quite becoming leading man material while dating one of the most famous women in the world over the last six years.
‘It was easier during the pandemic when it was just the two of them, but once things returned to normal, Taylor Swift the superstar emerged, and their differences were even more apparent.”
It comes after Swift fans speculated about their break-up after discovering clues in her recent Eras setlist.
In the ERas tour setlist for her stadium concert in Texas on March 31, revealed a week before the split news broke, Swift subbed out Invisible String, about two soulmates bound together, for The 1, which reminisces fondly about a past romance.
It was the first time she performed the song on the tour which kicked off last month in America.
