Crowd chaos at Red Hot Chili Peppers Brisbane show

Suncorp Stadium has defended wait times after complaints of massive queues at Sunday’s Red Hot Chili Peppers show.

Fans were left “extremely frustrated” at the Red Hot Chili Peppers stadium show in Brisbane Sunday night, as massive crowds saw some concertgoers waiting hours to enter Suncorp Stadium.

Amy McDonough bought tickets to the concert with her husband Elliot and their 10-year-old son. They arrived at 5.30pm, with a plan to get dinner before opening act Post Malone started at 6.45pm, but after seeing the crowds quickly decided to join the queue.

The McDonough’s had moved just 50m in the sweltering heat when they heard Post Malone start his set from outside the stadium.

“When you pay $725 for three tickets, do the right thing and arrive early and still miss part of the first act it is beyond frustrating,” Ms McDonough said.

“The line started to move very slowly at 6pm but due to no crowd control, there was no formed lines and just crowds pushing forwards making the traffic worse.

“We made it through the gates at 7.05pm, 20 minutes after it started and 1h35 after we lined up.”

Ms McDonough had said she believed Gates A and B were not open until 6pm, despite the event schedule stating gates would open at 5pm but Suncorp have denied this.

“There will be people not in until after 8pm,” Ms McDonough said.

Pictures showed thousands waiting to enter the stadium just before Post Malone’s performance.

Roads were also banked up, with heavy traffic for 5km along the Riverside Expressway leading up to Suncorp Stadium about 6.45pm.

TransLink offered free public transport to and from the stadium, and added extra services to help crowds get home at the end of the show.

A Suncorp Stadium spokesperson on Monday said all gates opened at 5pm as planned, and that additional measures were taken to help speed up entry.

“We anticipated a rush given the support act Post Malone was also a headliner in his own right,” the spokesperson said.

“In the lead up to the event we saturated ticket holders with multiple messages and reminders to encourage early arrivals.

“The largest queuing point was at the southern end. As numbers swelled, venue staff were active in encouraging people to move to the northern end to speed up their entry.

“Wait times at the southern end ranged from 3 minutes at 5.45pm to 17 minutes at 6.15pm. This increased to approximately 30 minutes at 6.45pm but subsided after that so that at 7.30pm there was no waiting.

“As a result of the blowout at 6.45pm, we obtained permission from the promoter to change from 100 per cent wanding to targeted and random wanding.

“The gates were totally clear by 7.30, well in advance of the Red Hot Chili Peppers who came on at 8.30pm.

“As always, the venue will review all aspects of the event including arrivals,” they said.
