Where you can see first live drive-in concert

Some of the nation’s biggest names in music are getting together to perform for us live from the comfort of our own cars. Here’s everything you need to know.

A GROUP of iconic musicians are coming together to create Queensland’s first live drive-in concert series.

Refusing to let the concert experience die during the pandemic, Drive-In Concerts Live will see musicians, including Australian singer-songwriter Russell Morris, perform for fans from the comfort of their car.

Ahead of the concert, patrons will be shown to their car spot, where they will tune into the FM frequency on their radio, then watch the action on stage, the big screen, or on their personal device.

The concept was the brainchild of Michael “China” Walker, from John Paul Young’s Allstar Band, in collaboration with Nick Chugg and music industry lawyer Matt McCormick.

“This is a job much bigger than for one person, so I rang people who are good at this. One of my mates, Nick Chugg, is the son of (concert tour promoter) Michael Chugg, and we’ve been friends for a long time ... so we’ve teamed up,” Walker told The Sunday Mail.

Morris said his creative juices had been flowing since being in isolation so fans may get to hear some new material at the first concert, which is being held in Cleveland on June 13.

“We’ll play a couple of new ones and a couple of older songs. I’ve written a fair bit since I’ve been in isolation,” he said.

“It’ll be nice because at the moment, I’m writing and playing in a room by myself, and it’s nice to interact with other musicians.

“Even though we’re not actually with people who are listening to the music and connecting with them, we’re trying to connect in a different way, and I don’t know what to expect.”

Walker hopes the idea will show creative industry workers that “there is hope”.

“For me, this was one of the major driving forces when (the pandemic) happened,” he said.

“The creative industries were the first to be pulled, and it was pulled instantaneously. There was no warning, it was so sudden.

“Having put on something like this means that, potentially, the people who are in our industry see there’s hope – a light at the end of the tunnel – that it isn’t a train coming towards you.

“We could use a bit of happy.”
