Hamilton the Musical has finally arrived in Brisbane and the River City’s who’s who flocked the red carpet to see the curtains raise on opening night of the hit show.
Brisbane is the production’s last stop in Australia, before it leaves for New Zealand and that gives it an extra urgency.
Tickets have been selling like the proverbial hot cakes up until the show’s April 2 final performance, but it’s rumoured there may be extra dates announced.
A packed guest list of VIPs dressed to the nines walked the red carpet, with Hamilton producer Michael Cassel presiding over the festivities, before they were hosted for pre-show and interval drinks in the Concert Hall at Qpac, just a stumble from the Lyric theatre where local hero, Brisbane rapper Sami Afuni was expected to get a rousing welcome in this his first show.
“Brisbane … this is where it’s at,” he declared before the show and he’s right.
It was the night of the year thus far in the arts in Australia and there was an impressive guest list including Deputy Premier Steven Miles, singers Jaguar Jonze, Megan Washington and Katie Noonan, former Queensland Bull Lee Carseldine and former Governor-general of Australia Dame Quentin Bryce.
When the curtain closed on opening night the VIPs were quick to their feet, delivering a rousing standing ovation.
