Tom Hanks visits a Gold Coast beach as flooding delays filming on Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis movie

Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic has hit a snag, with the recent severe storm on the Gold Coast flooding Village Roadshow Studios and delaying production – but a Hawaiian shirt-wearing Tom Hanks doesn’t seem to mind.

ACTOR Tom Hanks has extra time on his hands on the Gold Coast after the recent flooding in the city delayed filming on the Elvis biopic he is here to star in.

The Courier-Mail can confirm the severe storm that flooded parts of the Gold Coast two weeks ago, closing the major theme parks including Movie World, also caused flooding at the neighbouring Village Roadshow Studios, where Baz Luhrmann’s big-budget Warner Bros flick is due to film.

The suburb of Coomera, where the studios are located, was inundated with 90mm of rain in just one hour during the storm.

While cameras were scheduled to roll this month, a spokesperson for the production said the rain event caused a “slight delay by just over a week”.

Filming is understood to have been pushed out to the first week of March.

The film, which is in pre-production, stars Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker, Austin Butler as Elvis and Australian Olivia DeJonge as Priscilla Presley.

On Friday, Hanks, who arrived on the Gold Coast last weekend, was spotted on his second beach trip this week, going on a lunch time stroll at Broadbeach.

The two-time Oscar winner went unnoticed by beachgoers as he wandered past the Kurrawa Surf Club, took off his sandals and strolled down to the water.

Joined by two minders, Hanks offered a wave and a smile when he spotted the photographer.

Filming on the Elvis biopic is scheduled to last for 17 weeks, inject $105 million into the Queensland economy and create 900 jobs.
