Starvation diet leads to six pack for rugby league great Andrew Ettingshausen

Living on rice for breakfast, lunch and dinner is not much fun, but for rugby league great Andrew Ettingshausen, the upside was getting back his first six-pack in 20 years.

NINETEEN years after retiring from rugby league, legend of the game Andrew Ettingshause has his six pack back.

And he’s got reality show Australian Survivor: Champions v Contendors to thank for it.

“Living on rice for breakfast, lunch and dinner is not much fun. You drop the weight pretty quick. I reckon that is the best diet on the planet,” Ettingshausen told Confidential.

“The fat comes off you and the muscles stick out.”

Of his ripped body, he said: “I probably haven’t had a six pack for 20 years since I was playing professional footy. No food, that gives you a six pack pretty quick.”

Fifty appears to be the new 40 with a number of high profile Aussie blokes keeping themselves ripped.

Both Larry Emdur, 54, and Rodger Corser, 46, have showed off their six packs on the cover of Men’s Health magazine while former Foreign Minister Julie Bishop’s partner David Panton was photographed shirt off on the beach at Karl Stefanovic’s wedding in Mexico in December.

Ettingshausen, who is regarded as one of the greats of the game and played for Cronulla Shakes in the 80s and 90s, lost about seven kilograms while shooting Survivor, which premieres on Channel 10 on Wednesday.

“It just strips off you so quickly,” he said. “You think everything will be fine and you can obviously go out and forage for some other stuff like pawpaw if you can get it growing naturally in the jungle.”

Ettingshausen will compete as a champion in the series alongside teammates including Susie Maroney, Nova Peris, Steven Bradbury and Simon Black.

The series was shot in Fiji and sees a team of champions go head to head with a group of everyday Australians.

“Playing for Australia was a super tough gig but this is a different sort of game because you are not just tested physically,” Ettingshausen said. “The social game is so big and if you haven’t formed the right alliance or if you are with the wrong people … everything is tested so I think as far as Survivor goes, it is an incredibly tough game.”
