Sonia Kruger reveals the surprising secret behind age-defying looks

At 57, Sonia Kruger reveals her top tips for staying healthy and there’s one that might surprise you.

She’s the woman who looks like she’s getting younger the older she gets.
But for Queensland-born Sonia Kruger, 57, the secret to defying age is simple.

“For me now it’s down to three key things, getting enough sleep, getting enough exercise and eating well,” she said.

“It probably sounds like the world’s most boring answer but it’s not rocket science.

“Sleep is one of the biggest things and maybe having Maggie, who is in Grade One now, I tend to go to bed when she does which is about 8pm.”

There’s also one other vital aspect to her routine, confesses Kruger.

“I’m one of those people who has got to clean the house up before I go to bed at night,” she laughs.

“I cannot get up to a dirty kitchen … if it’s all clean I’m at peace with the world.”

The mum-of-one has never been one to shy away from age. She embraces it and as the TV personality promotes the latest products from Tasmanian self-tanning company Three Warriors as their brand ambassador, she’s flaunting a showstopping bronzed body.

It’s one she credits to a good diet and exercise regimen, with her dance fitness program Strictly You but mostly, she says, her ageless outlook is down to attitude.

“I feel exactly the same way as I did when I was 30 … age is a state of mind,” she said.

“It’s how you approach life, I think I’ve always had a taste for adventure, travel and new experiences and I don’t see that ever changing.”

Since starring in Strictly Ballroom more than 30 years ago, Kruger has become one of the most popular, and busiest, personalities on Australian television.

As she reflects on her longevity, Kruger feels the pressures put on women in the entertainment industry are slowly starting to shift.

“As a woman in the business, I look around and see other women kicking goals and they’re women who have been around for a while and have a lot of experience,” she said.

“Our audience need to be given some respect, we can’t be so shallow to say it’s only about your look.

“It has to be about more than that and you have to build some connection and some relatability … we want to see ourselves represented as women and reflected and I guess experience counts for something.”

Kruger has received her share of criticism and backlash across her career but says ‘to survive, you have to let it go.’

“You have to be very resilient to be in it and you have to be able to take criticism,” she said.

“You have to recognise not everybody is going to like you and you can’t please everybody all of the time.

“You have to be Teflon and let it slide off you. I know in my heart who I am and that’s the most important.”
