Ratings to be taken into account as part of Logies voting overhaul
The Logie Awards voting system has been widely criticised in the past, even by last year’s Gold Logie winner Tom Gleeson. But now organisers are changing the voting system for the first time, where TV ratings into account.

The voting system is often the most contentious issue surrounding the Logies, with many branding the event a glorified personality contest, however organisers are aiming to change that perception with a new voting methodology.
Sunday Confidential can reveal the voting system will be simplified to include only one voting period as opposed to two; ratings will now be taken into account; and networks will now only be able to submit five candidates for each category instead of as many as they like.
“We get feedback every year from the networks and we always listen to them and work out what we can do to improve the Logie awards,” TV Week editor Thomas Woodgate said.
“In a nutshell, the most popular voting period will now be one extended live voting period which will run for five weeks immediately after we announce the nominees.
“Also all networks are invited to submit just five candidates for each of the 12 Most Popular Awards, including the Gold Logie Award for Most Popular Personality.”

This will no doubt cause some drama in the corridors of numerous television networks.
“It is a positive step for the network because they have the ultimate control over who they can put forward for those categories,” Woodgate said.
“They can essentially shortlist candidates that they want to put forward. They have the power from the get go.”
The Logie Awards voting system has been widely criticised in the past.
In 2018, there was a backlash after Grant Denyer took home the Gold Logie despite the fact his game show, Family Feud, had just been cancelled.
This is perhaps why ratings are now being taken into account for the first time.
“What we are doing with this new methodology, is we will have a very short list of nominees that people can vote for,” Woodgate said.
“By using ratings we can now determine what is considered popular these days.”
When asked whether Tom Gleeson’s controversial win in 2019 was behind the move, Woodgate said: “Not at all. We look every year at how we can change and evolve the Logies and this is something we have thought about for a while.”
