Brendan ‘Jonesy’ Jones and Amanda Keller don’t want to be compared to colleagues Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O.
Named Best on Air Team on the FM dial at the Australian Commercial Radio Awards at the weekend, WSFM duo Jonesy and Amanda have plenty of reason to celebrate after last week also announcing they had re-signed to the station for a further three years.
In making that announcement, parent company Australian Radio Network (ARN) also declared Kyle and Jackie O would remain hosting breakfast on KIIS FM for another six years in a deal said to be worth up to $50 million.
“I’d say that (figure) is a bit of a build-up that might have (been) pumped up because it is important to look good with that sort of money. That is the way that show (Kyle and Jackie O) rolls,” Jonesy said of rivals Kyle and Jackie O’s speculated deal. “I don’t take anything away from them with that, that is their thing, that is what they do. They respect us and we respect them.”
Diplomatically, Keller added: “We actually really like them and we are very pragmatic, they have their show and they have their style of doing things and we have our style of doing things. You’d be bashing your head against a brick wall if you cared and let it get to you but I will be hitting them up for some bus money.”
Winning Best On Air Team in the FM market marked the third time the pair had won that award in their 14 years together. They previously took home the trophy in 2012 and 2014 and, like most people, don’t like to talk about their wage.
“You get up in the morning because you love what you do,” Keller said. “No amount of money could make you love this if you don’t love it. We always feel very lucky that we love it.”
She continued: “We are very much living the lives of our listeners. We have suburban lives. We are very much like our listeners and I love that.”
