Alan Jones has proved why he’s the $8 million man.
After prolonged contract negotiations with bosses at Macquarie Media, the radio king resigned with the network last week and today pulled an impressive 17.6 per cent leading share of the overall breakfast market.
That keeps Jones well in the lead with a rise of 1.2 percentage points and ahead of his nearest competitor, KIIS duo Kyle and Jackie O with their 11.8 per cent share of the breakfast market, which was a 0.4 percentage point rise.
The second GFK radio ratings survey of the year has ABC Sydney’s Wendy Harmer and Robbie Buck following with an 8.9 per cent share, ahead of WSFM’s Jonesy and Amanda at 8.8 per cent (up 0.9), smoothFM’s Bogart Torelli and Glen Daniels at 7.5 per cent (down 0.5) and Nova 96.9s Fitzy and Wippa at 7.2 per cent (up 0.3).
In mornings, Ray Hadley, who was prepared to take Jones’ job if he didn’t resign, also had another strong survey with a 0.8 percentage point rise to a top 17.7 per cent share of the morning market.
Across the board, 2GB led the pack with a 14.8 per cent share of the Sydney market, an increase of 0.3 percentage points, followed by smoothFM at 10 per cent, a rise of 0.5 percentage points, and KIIS FM at 9.3 per cent, up 0.2 percentage points.
“The election certainly helped keep 2GB audience levels high and Alan Jones has posted his second best audience share in at least four years,” commentator and Mediaweek editor James Manning said.
In the drive afternoon slot, 2GB’s Ben Fordham jumped 0.8 percentage points to a lead of 11 per cent, followed by Nova’s Kate, Tim and Marty with a big 1.5 percentage point rise to a share of 9.9 per cent.
