AUSSIE superstar Margot Robbie is the toast of the Toronto International Film Festival.
Her latest film, I, Tonya, about disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding is receiving rave reviews from critics after the premiere over the weekend.
The Gold Coaster not only stared in the movie, but she was a co-producer alongside her husband Tom Ackerly.
Industry website Variety said the film was “built around something piercingly sharp and sincere: Margot Robbie’s canny, livewire, deeply sympathetic performance”.
“In case there was any doubt — some might say ‘Who knew’? — she’s a major actor.”
The praise for Robbie has been wide spread.
“Margot Robbie breaks through with a strong performance as disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding in Craig Gillespie’s darkly comic biopic,” The Hollywood Reporter wrote.
Vanity Fair also said: “With a top-flight cast and a willingness to turn tragedy into farce, I, Tonya is a risky comi-tragedy that succeeds on the power of its performances.”
This could be an award- winning performance from the Aussie.
Robbie isn’t the only Aussie stealing the limelight in Toronto this week.
Nicole Kidman attended the screening of The Killing of a Sacred Deer in a colourful Valentino gown. She was later joined by husband Keith Urban. A pregnant Rose Byrne was missing when her latest project was premiered at the festival yesterday.
One of the highlights of yesterday’s showings was Louis C.K.’s first film in more than 10 years, I Love You, Daddy.
Byrne stars in the movie alongside Louis C.K., Edie Falco and Helen Hunt.
