Closet singer Gretel Killeen has come clean on her secret passion after being revealed as the first celebrity taking part in The Masked Singer Australia.
The former Big Brother host tricked judges Dannii Minogue, Dave Hughes, Lindsay Lohan and Jackie O as they failed to pick her voice as she belted out her version of Fame in an octopus costume.
“I believe it’s vital to learn who you are by challenging your boundaries,” Killeen told The Daily Telegraph after taking off her mask.
“I love the idea of singing in public but am shy about it, so the offer to sing in public whilst disguised as an octopus was a perfect fit. The format is innocent, fun-loving and inspiring -particularly when you consider how brave we non singers have had to be to get involved.”
The Masked Singer is a new format in Australia, picked up by Channel 10 after first launching in Korea and subsequently the US.
The series sees the judging panel, and viewers at home, faced with the challenge of guessing which famous person is behind the mask when they perform.
Killeen, 56, has been a much loved fixture on Australian television for many years but has never been known as a singer.
To she has a sensational voice, Killeen responded: “actually I don’t have a sensational voice. I have a sensational voice for a writer/comic in the same way that seeing an emu fly would be sensational.”
Killeen watched a couple of minutes of the US version but turned it off for fear of chickening out before taking to the stage.
Other names being touted as possible contestants on the show include Nikki Webster, Deni Hines, Bindi Irwin, Cody Simpson and Rob Mills.
Keeping her appearance on the show was not easy for Killeen.
“I got into the habit of singing all the time and lots of people assumed I’d fallen in love and wanted to meet the sucker,” she said. “I also lost weight because of the stress and some people thought I was secretly ill and suffering in silence, which to be honest would be quite out of character.”
