Finally — a new hue to knock black off its perch.

Sydney’s stars are ditching dark and embracing a white hot trend when they take to the red carpet this season.

A-listers including former Miss World Australia Erin Holland, food publisher Donna Hay and reality TV star Tegan Martin have all switched the LBDs for head-to-toe white ensembles in recent weeks.

Holland flashed the flesh this week at Donna Hay’s 100th issue party in a stunning backless Rebecca Vallance dress.

“I love white — it’s fresh, trendy and suits everyone. It’s a nice change from wearing darker clothes in winter and it pops at night time. It’s great to brighten up your wardrobe without having to wear colours,” Holland says.

The model, who recently traded her blonde locks for a more sultry brunette hue, says hair colour impacts fashion choices.

“Now I’ve changed my hair colour, I try to wear outfits that pop and Rebecca Vallance’s gowns do that perfectly. Also, it’s summer in Europe right now, so wearing white makes me feel like I’m on holiday — it’s like bringing a bit of Santorini to the cold Sydney nights,” says Holland.

At the same event, host Hay looked stunning in a Kym Ellery frock with dramatic bell cuffs while The Living Room’s host Amanda Keller rocked the Logies recently in a full-length Mary Ioannidis Couture gown with front split and fringed cuffs.

Other local brands serving up a selection of ivory-hued options include Carla Zampatti, Bianca Spender, Balmain and Camilla and Marc.

The designs brighten up cocktail hour and David Jones buying manager of womenswear Teneille Oakley says they sell well all year round.

“While it’s more popular in summer we still buy for winter because it’s a nice way to brighten up a wardrobe and everyone looks good in white. There are still sunny days during the season so we don’t have to rug up that much,” says Oakley.

While shades of vanilla and eggshell flatter most skin types, Oakley says customers can also wear accessories to tap into the trend.

Sydney brand, Camilla and Marc’s patent leather boot has been one of this season’s best-selling styles.

“White is a key driver of the accessories trend and I’ve seen lots of people wearing them,” says Oakley.

Over in the United States, wearing white after Labour Day — which marks the end of summer — is considered the ultimate fashion faux-pas. While the sartorial rule has never applied in Sydney, dark shades are traditional favourites during the cooler months.

Director of Australian Finishing School Amanda King says classic neutrals are a go-to because Sydneysiders are inspired by European trends.

“It is summer in Europe right now, and with our mild weather women can emulate the classic look that’s big in the south of France,” says King.
