Brisbane has been given its first glimpse of Young Rock.

A quiet shopping strip in Strathpine, north of Brisbane, was transformed into 1980s Honolulu as filming on Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s NBC comedy series, which details the world’s highest paid actor’s younger years, shut down parts of the suburb on Wednesday.

Vintage cars, which were transported to the set via large trailers, were seen lined up outside Carlos Naples Pizza Restaurant, off Bells Pocket Rd, which had been rebranded as El Nostimo Pizzeria for the series.

American actor Bradley Constant, who plays a 15-year-old Johnson, filmed scenes working at the restaurant for a number of hours throughout the afternoon as locals filtered through to watch from outside the roped-off areas.

Constant is one of three actors portraying Johnson from age 10 to 20 in the series.

A note was sent out to Strathpine residents on Friday to inform them filming on Young Rock would take place on Wednesday between 2pm and 6pm, thanking them for their co-operation to ensure “a safe and fun shoot in Strathpine”.

Residents were visited personally to inform them that access would be restricted during the shoot, which was at one point paused for a local woman, who had an ambulance booked on Wednesday afternoon for a hospital appointment.

Moreton Bay mayor Peter Flannery said the council had waived filming fees for the production because of the economic benefit of bringing the 100 cast and crew to the region.

“We want a slice of that Hollywood razzle dazzle. Which is why we’re working to make Moreton Bay Region the easiest and cheapest place to film in southeast Queensland,” he said.

“I hope this puts us in the box-office-seat for future filming success.”

Filming is based at Screen Queensland Studios in Hemmant while a film crew was also at Capalaba on Tuesday night in what was the first on-location shoot of the series.

“The night-time scenes took place outside the Wicked Brew Café, Dollery Road, Capalaba, and on Loraine Street, Capalaba, where the production team put in a temporary bus stop for the shoot,” Redlands mayor Karen Williams said.

“Not only is it exciting to know our naturally wonderful city will be showcased on screens around the world but the boost to the local economy is also welcome.”

“As we focus on recovering from the impacts of COVID-19, international productions such as this help support our economy through film crews and actors using our local businesses and services.”

Young Rock, as well as two other NBC series set to film in Brisbane over 18 months, are expected to inject $140 million into the local economy and create 3,000 jobs – including 1,000 cast and crew and 2,000 extras.

They will be broadcast across the US on NBC, streaming service Peacock, and basic cable network, USA.
