After taking over parts of Brisbane last year, Young Rock has returned to Queensland, with filming on season two under way on the Gold Coast.

Cameras have rolled on the new season of Young Rock as the hit Dwayne Johnson series makes a return to Queensland.

Following a successful season one shoot in Brisbane, the second season began filming yesterday, moving to Village Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast.

The biographical comedy series, based on Johnson’s upbringing and rise to fame, will also film on location around South East Queensland in a $47 million investment in the state.

Young Rock’s first season along with Joe Exotic and Irreverent were secured for Queensland last year in a three-series deal between the Federal Government and NBC Universal.

After a positive experience filming in the state, NBCU has returned for season two following a further $6.3 million cash injection under the Federal Government’s Location Incentive program.

It was also supported through the Queensland Government’s Production Attraction Strategy.

Joe Exotic wrapped filming in Brisbane this week, while Irreverent is currently filming in Far North Queensland.

Federal Arts Minister Paul Fletcher said: “The Young Rock sequel is providing employment for more than 300 Australian cast and crew, and more than 1,200 Australian extras.

“NBCUniversal continuing their pipeline of work in Australia … is a testament to our talented screen sector.

“This steady line of work means crews that worked on Young Rock season one will be able to return to season two in senior roles with increasingly prominent international credits.”

The production of Young Rock last year injected an estimated $33.8 million into the economy. Season one was a hit in the US and in late August the series won the Hollywood Critics Association’s Best broadcast network comedy series.

Screen Queensland boss Kylie Munnich said the repeat business was a promising sign for local screen industry workers.

“We are thrilled to welcome back Universal Studios Group for season two of one of the year’s highest rating shows in the US,” Ms Munnich said.

Young Rock’s return to Queensland to film another 11 episodes is a wonderful endorsement of all we have on offer as a production location – competitive incentives, world-class facilities, fantastic crews and diverse locations.

“This family-friendly, coming-of-age comedy has South East Queensland doubling for Hawaii, Pennsylvania and Miami in the ’80s and ’90s, so the range of locations on offer, alongside our ideal climate, is definitely on display in Young Rock.”

Young Rock moves into Village Roadshow Studios this week after Netflix’s Jessica Watson biopic True Spirit wrapped earlier this month.

The cast completed hotel quarantine in Queensland.
