Jessica Watson’s iconic Ella’s Pink Lady sailing boat returned to Gold Coast waters on Friday as the Netflix biopic about her solo sailing venture recreated her famous homecoming.
Film crews took over part of the Gold Coast Broadwater, near The Spit, early Friday morning to shoot scenes for the film, True Spirit, with actor Teagan Croft spotted aboard the recognisable pink-embellished boat.
Croft, who portrays Watson in the Netflix production, waved to cheering extras who were grouped together behind a large pink banner reading “Welcome Home Jessica”.
The Gold Coast teen returned home to a fanfare, sailing into Sydney Harbour in 2009 following her record-breaking solo round-the-world voyage, before continuing on to Queensland.
While the Gold Coast production was originally scheduled to film partly in Sydney, the current lockdown in NSW has blocked them from filming in the city.
New Zealand actor Cliff Curtis, who was cast as Watson’s sailing coach, was also spotted filming aboard the boat in another scene yesterday.
“Gold Coast is a beautiful place to be and is significant that this is where her journey started,” Curtis said on the first day of filming last month.
“I’m rubbish at sailing, that’s why I’m an actor, so I can pretend. I’ve got good mates and I’ve got good trainers. They’ll sort all that out.”
True Spirit is filming at Village Roadshow Studios as well as on location on the Gold Coast.
Crews have been spotted at Korman Family Park on Chevron Island as well as on the beach at Main Beach, opposite Sea World, on Thursday morning.
