Erin Molan has hit out at Nine Entertainment for its toxic culture and its employees “stealing” what should have been an enjoyable time in her career.
Molan, who worked at the beleaguered network for 12 years from her mid-twenties, this week told Saturday Confidential that while she was happy to see the Network seemed to be addressing its toxic workplace culture, that didn’t change the fact that her time there made her miserable.
“Channel 9 was such a big part of my life and should have been the most amazing experience given the opportunities I was afforded and the things I achieved,” Molan said.
“I’m still very sad that much of that joy was stolen from me by others.”
In recent months, Nine has admitted they created a workplace in which sexual harassment, bullying and abuse of power is systemic. Changes have been made and multiple employees have left the company.
Molan and other current and former employees we have spoken to are “optimistic” that positive change is taking place.
“I’m optimistic about Channel 9 and where it’s headed… and I’m becoming increasingly more so,” Molan said.
“It’s still very early days and I still think there are some significant changes that need to be made… but I understand some of these things take time, and due process is important for all involved.
“I know any network who boasts the likes of women like Deb Knight, Amelia Adams, Belinda Russell, Davina Smith, Ali Langdon… I could go on and on — all incredibly talented women but even better people — has to evolve to keep them.
“There are also many men there who are incredible allies… like Peter Overton… rather than perpetrators. And I have faith in them too.”
Molan also addressed rumours her successful 2Day FM radio show with Dave Hughes and Ed Kavalee would not continue next year.
“The greatest gifts are sometimes the last thing in the world you think you want,” Molan said.
“Radio finishing up is that for me. I miss our team… desperately… but Hughsey, Ed and my three-way group chat helps — mind you, it could NEVER be printed,” she laughed.
“Every project I’m doing now I love so much.
“I have full control of the content I produce — on my Sky News show, in my columns and all the other ventures I’m involved in, including the new Honey and Beau collection.
“There are many aspects of the past four years I don’t miss — the early mornings aren’t one of them by the way — but you couldn’t pay me enough to not wake up to my six-year-old every morning, not for many years to come.
“It’s been life-changing for both of us.”
