The world’s most talked-about new celebrity couple could be headed to Queensland.

Actor Pete Davidson is set to star in new film Wizards!, from Brad Pitt’s production company, which will shoot in Far North Queensland later this year in another production coup for the state.

The Saturday Night Live! star has been at the centre of the global spotlight since he began dating Kim Kardashian in the wake of her public split from Kanye West, and all eyes will be on whether the reality star joins her new beau in tropical Queensland.

Wizards! was secured for the state via $3.6 million in funding from the Federal Government’s Location Incentive Program as well as an additional $1.183 million from the Queensland Government under their Production Attraction Strategy.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the production would inject around $14.7 million into the state economy and create around 100 jobs for Queensland cast and crew, as well as 300 extras.

“What a coup for Queensland,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“Once again, our local film industry and picture-perfect locations have lured another valuable production with big budgets to spend in our regions.”

Wizards! follows two hapless beach-bar operators, played by Davidson and German actor Franz Rogowski, who get themselves into trouble when they stumble across stolen loot and also stars British actors Naomi Scott and Sean Harris.

It is the first production from Pitt’s company Plan B to film in Queensland, teaming up with Australian writer-director David Michôd, who previously collaborated with Pitt on War Machine (2017) and The King (2019).

Michod, who also directed Animal Kingdom (2010), wrote the screenplay based on a story he co-wrote with Joel Edgerton.

Federal Arts Minister Paul Fletcher said it was the 16th production secured for Queensland under the Location Incentive, and was expected to use the services of 400 local businesses when it arrives in Tropical North Queensland later this year.

The feature film is produced by Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner of Plan B and Liz Watts of Sydney-based See-Saw Films.

“After shooting his last two features in different parts of the world, we are thrilled to be bringing David Michôd’s next feature to Queensland with its wealth of talent in its cast and crews, as well as enviable locations,” Watts said.

The filming announcement comes ahead of next month’s global releases; Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis and Netflix’s Spiderhead starring Chris Hemsworth, which both filmed in Queensland on the Gold Coast.
