Sunshine Coast teacher Chrissy Zaremba says she knew Mark Wales would win Australian Survivor the moment they faced the jury.
Wales unanimously won the title of sole Survivor and the $500,000 cash prize during Monday night’s finale of the Channel 10 reality show, beating Zaremba and fellow Queenslander Shay Lajoie.
“Absolutely (Wales) deserved to win. This is Survivor. Strategy is everything and that’s all (the jury) saw; we were dead meat,” Zaremba said on Tuesday.
“They didn’t look at Shay’s physical game or my social game.”
The 42-year-old mother of three had never watched an episode of the reality series when she agreed to go on the Blood v Water format with her brother-in-law, former NRL star Michael Crocker, to help him achieve his dream of competing on the show.
While he was eliminated prior to the tribal merge, she carried on to reach the final three, surviving 47 days cast out at the Charters Towers site in North Queensland.
“It’s surreal … but it didn’t take long to adapt,” she said. “I knew I needed to hustle if I wanted to play. I had my name written down the first night.
“I found an alliance and stuck with them the whole way.”
“I wouldn’t change a thing about my Survivor journey. I didn’t go on to win $500,000, I did it to tick off my brother in law’s bucket list, make my kids proud and prove I could do something out of the ordinary. I feel really happy and content.”
A proud Crocker didn’t know the result and watched the finale with her as a fan on Monday through “a lot of tears and hugs”.
Zaremba said she lost 14kg during her 47 days of filming and admits the experience has helped her live a healthier lifestyle.
“Plus a tan I reckon it looked like 15kg,” she laughed.
“We were eating raw. We had no sugar. At my age it’s hard to get weight off.
“I feel better and I’m definitely living a little better.”
She clarified she and Josh Millgate were “fine” since he was eliminated from the show and said she was open to opportunities in the future.
“Never say never. I am a live in the moment person. I take it day by day. It’s 10 minutes of fame,” she said.
“If something bigger and better came along then I’m open to it.”
