Celebrities join thousands of people for Women’s March Sydney

Thousands of women and took to the streets of Sydney to call for an end to domestic violence and for equality. There were even some local celebrities in the crowd doing their bit to raise awareness.

Thousands of women and men took to the streets of Sydney to call for an end to domestic violence and for equality in general.

Familiar faces including actors Erika Heynatz, Krew Boylan, Pia Miller and Sam Frost marched with around 5000 others as part of the Women’s March Sydney from Hyde Park to Belmore Park in the Sydney CBD.

Actor Pia Miller: “As a collective all of our voices really matter and that is why I am here and why I am so overwhelmed to see how many people are showing up. It is an opportunity to not be silenced, to be loud and have our voices heard.”

Fashion designer Jasmine Yarbrough: “It is incredibly important to me to be a part of today alongside so many inspirational and strong women. The issue of violence and abuse against women in our society has to be addressed and events like this bring attentikon to make change happen.”

“Women’s March in general we stand against any sort of activities or rhetoric that are hurtful,” organiser Jaime Evans said.

“We stand against misogyny, sexism, racism, any kind of behaviour that is not inclusive and supportive. This event in particular today we think that it is time to take a stand against domestic and family violence. Australia needs to have a discussion about what is happening because too many women are losing their lives and women are feeling unsafe.”

Others spotted in the crowd include actor Barry Otto and filmmaker daughter Gracie, fashion designers Alexandra Smart, Kit Willow, Jasmine Yarbrough, Alice McCall and Jamie Blakey, as well as television and radio presenter Yumi Stynes and singer Montaigne (Jessica Cerro).

“There’s a lot of issues we are trying to raise awareness for but particularly today our epidemic of violence against women in this country,” former Home And Away actor Heynatz said.

“This is the time to do it. It is the time to raise our voices. Often we don’t feel as though we have a power as a single voice and so a march like today is the opportunity for us to stand in solidarity.”
