Former Brisbane Broncos playmaker Ben Hunt has urged Brodie Croft to stick with the beleaguered club despite his possible axing from the halves.
The St George Illawarra Dragons star, who will come up against his old club at Suncorp Stadium on Friday, said Croft should focus on forcing his way back into the side rather than looking for an escape route.
It follows news that Croft is likely to be sidelined for Friday’s clash against the Dragons in favour of Anthony Milford and Tom Deardon.
NRL INSIDE JOB: SHOCKING LINKS TO SEIBOLD RUMOURS
“I would just tell him to keep his head down, train hard and force his way back into the team. It’s a tough city to be halfback in and I know how that feels,” said Hunt, who copped heavy criticism over his performance for the Broncos in the 2015 NRL Grand Final before signing with the Dragons in 2017.
“You can’t pay attention to what’s being said about you.”
“I definitely think he should stick with it. He’s a quality young player. I don’t think he should get out. He just needs to train hard – things can change pretty quickly in rugby league.”
Hunt, who signed with the Broncos in 2008, said watching the club’s capitulation in the 2020 season had been “pretty painful”.
“I really feel for the guys up there. There always seems to be something new pop up and going wrong whether it’s on the field or off it,” he said.
“There’s obviously got to be some massive changes because it’s just not gone right. Whether it’s the coaching or the players, I can’t answer that because I’m not there, but from the outside looking in there obviously needs to be changes.”
BRONCOS FINED FOR BREACH OF PROTOCOL AFTER PUB SESSION
Meanwhile Hunt, who is an ambassador for new fragrance Thirst. A Scent by VB alongside fellow NRL stars James Tedesco and Wade Graham, was confident about his switch to hooker against the Broncos.
“I’m feeling good. It’s not my favourite position but it’s a position I can add a lot of value in,” he said.
“I would like to switch back to the halves but I don’t think that will happen this year if I’m being honest.”
“It’s always exiting to come back and play at Suncorp. I believe it’s the best stadium in the world to play rugby league.”
“I find it pretty funny when you get some boos from your old home crowd. I sort of appreciate it … you know they probably miss you.”
While his parents are travelling to Brisbane from central Queensland to watch him play, Hunt won’t be allowed to see them due to the COVID-19 restrictions imposed by the NRL, and joked that he’ll have to yell out to them from across the fence.
