Basketballer Liz Cambage the face of Bonds The Get Real campaign

Opals star Liz Cambage isn’t a vocal person and it wasn’t until she turned 23 she became confident to stand for what she believes in. And she has taken that to the forefront as the face of a new Bonds campaign.

She has a reputation for speaking fearlessly but voicing her opinion hasn’t always been easy for Opals star Liz Cambage.

The 27-year-old basketballer, who has today been announced as the face of Bonds new The Get Real campaign, which calls for women to reveal their true selves, said it wasn’t until she turned 23 that she felt confident enough to stand up for what she believes in.

“I spent my teenage years and early 20s being manipulated — well, not manipulated, but I was told what to do and what to say by agents and managers, and when I was around 23 I thought ‘I am sick of pretending to be someone and saying all these things that don’t really resonate with me’,” Cambage told Sunday Confidential from Indiana.

“I am really bad at holding my tongue, because it comes naturally for me to say what’s on my mind.”

Cambage, who has been vocal about gender double standards and positive body image, said she’s gained a thick skin in recent years and doesn’t worry about the haters.

“I don’t mind the backlash,” the 2.1m-tall star, who plays for Las Vegas Aces in the WNBA, said.

“I know who I am and I don’t care what anyone thinks or says about me at all, unless it’s my mother. And she is the one that gave me this mouth so it’s her fault.”

Cambage’s outspoken nature and strong views have also lured Adidas and lingerie label Bare to work with the Australian Commonwealth Games gold medallist, who has just been named in the WNBA All-Stars for the third time.

“I think it’s come to a point in society where brands are changing and they like people and public figures and athletes who have something to say and take a stance on issues,” she said. “It’s all about equality, which is one of the biggest things I stand for.

“That’s why I am very honoured to be a part of this Bonds campaign. It’s such a big deal for me. I grew up wearing Bonds, so it’s amazing to be part of it all.”
