Australian acting duo Todd Lasance and Claire van der Boom film thriller, Kidnapped, in Port Douglas

With Queensland becoming a hub for movie-making during the pandemic, a star Aussie acting duo have now jet-setted into Far North Queensland to film new thriller flick. Here’s everything you need to know.

A thriller starring Australia’s Hollywood exports Todd Lasance and Claire van der Boom is the latest film to call Queensland home.

Currently filming in Port Douglas, Kidnapped, a co-production between Australia and Canada, follows a woman returning to her hometown in Queensland with her husband and four-year-old daughter, who goes missing from the resort’s kids club in what becomes a parent’s worst nightmare.

“I feel very lucky to be shooting here in Far North Queensland,” said van der Boom, who plays the lead role.

“It’s an idyllic, tropical setting that brings a contrast to the story of my character searching for her kidnapped daughter. I’m having a lot of fun with this cast and excellent crew.”

The Logie winner got her film start opposite Joel Edgerton in The Square (2008) and starred in US hit show Hawaii Five-O for almost a decade before starring in comedy Palm Beach last year.

Playing her on-screen husband is Lasance, a former Home and Away star who lives in Los Angeles and will next year star opposite Michael B. Jordan in Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse.

Kidnapped is the latest film from Brisbane-based The Steve Jaggi Company, which recently wrapped romantic comedy This Little Love of Mine in Cairns in what was the first production to get underway in the state since COVID-19 lockdown.

They are also currently filming feel-good romance The Dog Days of Christmas at Warner Bros. Movie World on the Gold Coast while teen movie Swimming For Gold, filmed in Brisbane last year, will hit Australian cinemas on September 17.

Kidnapped links Steve Jaggi with Canadian production company Sepia Films and is directed by Canada’s Vic Sarin.

“I have filmed all over the world and it is fantastic to be back in Australia,” Sarin said. “The Port Douglas community has been very good to us and the shoot is tracking really well. The story is centred around a missing child, which is any parent’s biggest fear, and something we think will resonate with audiences.”

The film will be released in cinemas in 2021 as part of an exclusive deal with Event Cinemas, while worldwide distribution is being handled by Honalee Entertainment.

Queensland is increasingly becoming a hub for film production because of its relatively low infection rate with Dwayne Johnson’s TV series Young Rock the most recent US production to jump ship to Queensland, with filming due to begin in Brisbane in late October.
