Australian singer Cody Simpson shocked fans after revealing he has returned to his “first love” of swimming and qualified for the 2021 Australian Olympic trials.
Gold Coast born Simpson, who shot to fame at age 13 after uploading a series of cover songs to YouTube, revealed on social media on Sunday he had returned to swimming training five months ago.
“Growing up competing, and then inevitably having to cut my career short as (a) 13 year old Australian champion when I was given an opportunity in music that I couldn’t refuse,” Simpson wrote online.
“Now almost exactly 10 years later, here I am once more.
“For years I had been fuelled by the silent fire in my stomach of returning to my first love, the sport of swimming, with the idea that 2020 would be my year to have a crack at training again.”
Under coach Brett Hawke, Simpson qualified for the 100 fly in the Olympic trials.
“It is my greatest ambition to expand the limit and perceived notion of what’s possible for a man to achieve in a single lifetime, and I’m here to tell you can do absolutely ANYTHING if you are willing to work for it,” Simpson wrote.
The Australian celebrity said he was looking forward to seeing where swimming takes him.
Fans have embraced the news with open arms, with thousands commenting their messages of support on the announcement.
